In Umfokazi: A Feast for and of Crows (2026), a KwaZulu-Natal black backed jackal therianthrope devours its corvid prey on all fours as crows gather. The feast is not only the act of predation. The jackal figure—a liminal, shape-shifting body of a species known to inhabit threshold spaces: estuaries, mangrove swamps, river edges, forests, urban peripheries, gutters, and the interstices between developments—a nocturnal outsider, a trickster, consumes the other and by extension the land, while the crows witness. This work is a meditation on strangeness, unbelonging, strange-belonging, and making strangekin in the Haraway sense.
